A Look Back on Letter Writing

Long before Twitter, Instagram, or even the internet existed, A.C. Legg, Inc., offered our OPS Pork Sausage Seasoning lovers a shot at going “viral” in a simple writing contest! In September 1935, the company sought to reward our most creative customers with cash prizes for their 100-word letters, painstakingly handwritten or punched out on a typewriter, describing how and why they used A.C. Legg’s most popular seasoning blend for their sausage products.

As A.C. Legg’s Blend 10 gained popularity among sausage makers, farmers, and food operations across the county, our company realized that the most valuable feedback for our seasoning products could only come from people who used and appreciated them most. These customers recognized the importance of choosing fine flavors rooted in old-fashioned, homegrown tradition to feed their friends and families.

The First Prize winner of the contest received $50, in addition to bragging rights for being published in A.C. Legg’s future publications. (In today’s market, the award would be worth a little more than $1,000!) But the best part—besides the cash, obviously—was that participants didn’t have to be professional writers to win. Instead, they were hardworking farmers who took pride in feeding their communities and sourcing the best ingredients for their products.

On our #Journeyto100, we hope you enjoy looking back on how A.C. Legg, Inc., came to be “Built Upon a Flavor.” We look forward to sharing our love for delicious food products with you during the next 100 years!
