National Gumbo Day

The word gumbo derives from the African word ki ngombo meaning okra. A traditional gumbo includes okra, sausage, chicken, bell pepper, onions, celery and garlic. This Cajun specialty can be eaten year-round, but as we head into the colder months, it is a meal that will warm you from the inside out! Our Smoked Andouille Sausage Seasoning, Blend 163, adds a kick of spice and boldness as it accentuates the flavors in both your sausage and your gumbo recipes.

Our chef stresses the importance of getting a dark roux for your gumbo base. If you choose to utilize chicken his choice his chicken thighs because they do not dry out as quickly and are better for longer cook times. Feel free to set your gumbo over a hot stove for a nice long simmer as your flavors get to know each other. Enjoy this classic Cajun dish over a bed of rice as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler to bring a little warmth to your table.
